The shamrock, or three leaf clover, has been a traditional symbol of Ireland since the time of St. Patrick. As everyone knows, St Patrick is considered the patron saint of Ireland. He was the first Catholic missionary to Christianize the country. It is believed that he lived around 415 to 493. Ireland, as well as the rest of the British Isles, was pagan at that time. The three leaf clover is a metaphor for the Trinity.
